In the round of 16 of the World Cup on Sunday night, Senegal, the African champion, will take on England.

With two wins over Iran and Wales in between a 0-0 draw with the United States, the runners-up at the European Championship took first place in their group.

Senegal triumphed over Qatar and Ecuador after overcoming the setback of losing their star forward Sadio Mane prior to the competition and their opening match of the competition against the Netherlands.

Also, this is the first time England and Senegal have met in men’s international football.

The last time England faced an African opponent in the men’s World Cup knockout round, Sir Bobby Robson’s scout Howard Wilkinson allegedly dismissed the match as “a bye.” The confidence was grossly misplaced then and would be again three decades later.

Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye may be flanked by a pair of Championship wingers for Senegal, but their lightning-quick pace and directness could trouble England’s unimpressive backline.

This tournament, England has appeared at their best when launching a counterpress and creating opportunities in the process. The Three Lions could control this area when facing a Senegal team without its two starting midfielders.

In what may be a tight contest between two teams experienced in tournament football, England may have the edge, but their place in the quarter-finals is anything but guaranteed.
